Pigeons
Pigeons are found everywhere. However, they are seen as pests. Ever since I got the oportunity to interact with them and feed them, I really love stopping a moment to look at them every time I see them in the streets. It started not too long ago, when I was going out with friends. We were suposed to wait for a bus to get to where we were suposed to hang out. As we waited for the bus to appear, just as always, I couldn't help but try to get closer to the birds.
All my life, I've been told they can make you sick if you touch their feathers. But that is just an exageration. And these pigeons were taken care of by the community around them, which fascinated me the most. I ran into the market, bought some grains to feed them. And my friends and I even allowed them to stand on our hands. It felt magical, and I fell in love even more with nature. I've always loved animals, but there is something about these species most of us ignore. They deserve protection, even if they aren't as majestic as a tiger, or as cool as a wolf.
It breaks my heart to see some of them in poor conditions. Because even then, there's always going to be someone to despise them merely for existing. Urban fauna deserves respect. And the truth is, pigeons were first stolen from their habitat to use as messengers during the war. And once they weren't useful anymore, we abandoned them in the cities. They lost their ability to make nests, and now we mock them for it. It's our fault they live this way, and few are the ones that actually decide to do something about it.
